Our Approach

What has to be true for an investment to work?

Myers & Cooper examines the conditions behind an investment proposition and the information available to support them. Our assessment identifies where the case is persuasive and where it remains uncertain.

    Define the Question

    Define the decision.

Adding an investment and reconsidering an existing holding raise different questions. We agree the scope of the inquiry first, including which alternatives to consider and the information needed to assess them.

  2. 02
    Read the Evidence

Follow the claim back to its source.

    Source Verification

An advisor checks relevant statements against the original material, including qualifications that a summary may omit. Conflicting figures or missing documents become items for further investigation. Checks include identifying whether a document has been replaced by a later version.

    Research Support

We use technology to organize documents and produce working summaries. It helps identify passages requiring closer attention and questions to put to the investment provider. Assessment of the evidence remains with the advisor.

Myers & Cooper checks the dates and definitions behind material comparisons. Where reported figures cover different periods or use different measures, those differences are addressed before the figures inform a conclusion. Important exclusions in the underlying data remain attached to the comparison.

    Test the Investment Case

Change the assumptions. Examine the result.

We examine the relationship between the price paid and the future earnings or cash flows on which the investment case depends. Varying those inputs helps us assess how sensitive the modeled outcome is to the expectations behind it.

Myers & Cooper considers plausible combinations of changes, including circumstances in which several assumptions prove optimistic. The analysis helps identify which inputs have the greatest influence on the result.

A modeled outcome is interpreted within the limits of the inputs used. We consider whether a decision depends on an estimate for which the available evidence is weak.

  4. 04
    Reach a Recommendation

    Form the recommendation.

An advisor weighs the findings and considers the alternatives available within the assignment. The recommendation states the proposed action and the conditions on which it rests.

We identify developments that would warrant another assessment. Where an unresolved issue could materially affect the decision, we specify what further information is needed before proceeding. The record identifies what remains to be obtained and who is responsible for following it up.
